It was a sullen Peggy Jennett who went about making breakfast that morning for herself and the still-savage Max Orr. The radio was tuned in to a news broadcast. Orr sat on one of the kitchen chairs, scowling as he waited impatiently for the part of the news that interested him. As Peg put on the coffee to perk, the radio announcer switched to the local news.

“A dramatic new development in the Second City National Bank robbery occurred during the night,” the announcer declared, “when two police detectives traced two of the bandits to the apartment belonging to one of them, and there engaged in a fist and gun battle resulting in the death of one of the bandits, and injury for one of the detectives. The other bandit made a successful escape—apparently with the money stolen from the bank yesterday afternoon. The money was not found in the apartment after the battle, and .…”

Peg turned on Orr, her eyes blazing despite her fear of him. “You did lie! You’ve got that money!”

“Shut up!” Max Orr snarled at her. “I told you what happened. The dough was still in my place when I ran out. Something’s screwy.”

He fell silent, paying careful attention to what the announcer was saying.

Peg started to say more to him, suddenly switched her attention from Orr to the radio as a name caught her ears.

“The names of the two police detectives,” the announcer was saying, “are Walter Bonner and Benjamin Travis.”

“Walt?” Peg blurted. She turned questioning eyes on Max Orr. “Walt was one of the cops that busted in on you?”

It was Max Orr’s turn to look questioning. “What?”

“Walt Bonner,” she said, more quietly. “He’s the one we were working with. The one Hugh set up the bank job with.”

They looked at each other, then back to the radio.

“While Detective Travis took up a position on an adjacent roof,” the news announcer continued, “Detective Bonner broke in through the door of the bandit’s hideout. The two bandits jumped him, and in the struggle Detective Bonner was beaten with a gun and severely kicked. But he continued to put up a courageous fight against both of them. One of the bandits panicked and tried to get away via a fire escape. In a gun duel with Detective Travis, this bandit was killed. The other bandit broke free of Detective Bonner and got away. Detectives Bonner and Travis summoned other policemen, who surrounded the area but failed to find the escaped bandit. A search for the bank loot was also unsuccessful.”

“He’s got it,” Peg whispered. “Walt’s got the money!”

Orr, eyes slitted, continued to stare at the radio.

“The dead bandit,” the announcer concluded, “has been identified as Hugh Rehm, a California gambler with no previous criminal record. The bandit who escaped is believed to be Max Orr, a bank robber from the midwest.”

Orr cursed under his breath.

“In another section of the city, last night,” the announcer said, turning to another item, “juvenile hoodlums apparently struck again. The teen-age gang
